Jack Russell (CLE)                                Wes Ferrell (BOS)

In what was undoubtedly the best pitching dual of the entire 1929 season thus far, Jack Russell and Wes Ferrell both started the game and pitched into extra innings before this one was walked off in the bottom of the 10th inning.  Look at these incredible stat lines

Red Sox                  ip  h  r er  w  k      era

RUSSELL (L 0-4)   9.0 13  2  1  1  2   4.74

FERRELL (W 2-1)      10  5  1  1  0  3   2.83

The game was tied 1-1 after nine innings and the Indians decided to send Ferrell out for the 10th.  He retired the side in order and then Earl Averill came to the plate leading off the bottom of the 10th.  The Red Sox too kept faith in their starter, sending Russell out to pitch the 10th.  Unfortunately for the Red Sox, Averill blasted one over the fence (his first home run of the season) and gave the Indians the walk-off victory.  With the win, the Indians get back to .500 (9-9), while the Red Sox remain at the bottom of the league at 3-12.
