Stellar Performances - Chick Hafey (May 31, 1929)

 5/31/1929 Cincinnati Reds (17-22) at St. Louis Cardinals (24-18) Teams             1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E -----------         -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Reds                  0  0  0  0  0  1  2  0  2         5  9  0 Cardinals        0  0  0  0  0  4  1  0  1         6 12  1 Chick Hafey (STL) Chick Hafey had a big day in St. Louis, hitting a 2-run home run in the 6th inning and then salvaging a Cardinals victory after St. Louis surrendered the lead in the top of the 9th.  Hafey delivered a walkoff double that scored the winning run and gave the Cardinals the win.  Those were the only two hits from Hafey for the day but the Cardinals needed every one.  Hafey has quietly been having a season that is more than backing up star Jim Bottomley - he now sits at .284/.310/.568 with 9 home runs and 40 RBI. The Cardinals remain hot, winning 8 out of their last 10 games.  They are4.5 games out of first place, but that is more a result of the Giants being so

 5/29/1929 New York Yankees (20-14) at Washington Senators (19-15) Teams             1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E ----------           -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --          -- -- -- Yankees           0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0       0  3  3 Senators         3  0  0  0  1  0  2  3  x       9 12  0 Firpo Marberry (WSH) Firpo Marberry was brilliant today, shutting down the vaunted Yankees offense to give the Senators a third straight victory, two of which have come at the expense of the Yankees.  Marberry dominated from start to finish, pitching a shutout while giving up only two hits and striking out five.  After leading the AL for most of the season, the Senators appeared to have been faltering but now seem to have somewhat righted the ship and sit 3.5 games behind the first place Athletics.  With today's performance Marberry moves to 4-2 on the season with a 4.09 ERA. The Yankees are clearly struggling, having dropped three straight and being shut out in two of those loss

Stellar Performances - Jim Bottomley (May 28, 1929)

 5/28/1929 Pittsburgh Pirates (14-20) at St. Louis Cardinals (20-17) Teams             1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9 10 11         R  H  E -----------           -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Pirates             3  4  0  0  1  0  0  0  0  0  0         8 12  0 Cardinals       2  0  0  1  5  0  0  0  0  0  1         9 18  1 Jim Bottomley (STL) Jim Bottomley blasted his 10th and 11th home runs of the season today in St. Louis and the Cardinals needed every one of his 4 RBI to pull out the win.  The game ended in the bottom of the 11th inning with a walk off hit from catcher Jimmie Wilson, but it was Bottomley who starred today.  He now has 11 home runs on the season, only one behind Rogers Hornsby's league-leading 12.

 5/28/1929 St. Louis Browns (21-16) at Detroit Tigers (19-22) Teams                1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E --------                -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Browns            0  0  0  1  0  0  2  0  6         9 16  3 Tigers                 4  0  3  0  0  0  0  0  0         7 12  2 Wally Schang (SLB) St. Louis Browns catcher Wally Schang came into today without a home run on the season, but he couldn't have picked a better time to blast two over the wall in Detroit.  Schang hit two home runs, one coming in a 6-run top of the 9th inning that powered the Browns to a come-from-behind 9-7 victory.  Schang finished the day 3-4, with a walk, adding 4 RBI to his pair of home runs.   The Browns remain white hot, moving to 21-16 and staying within striking distance of the first place A's.

Stellar Performances - Mule Haas (May 28, 1929)

 5/28/1929 Philadelphia Athletics (22-12) at Boston Red Sox (11-24) Teams              1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E -----------           -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Athletics         0  0  1  5  0  3  0  1  2          12 14  1 Red Sox           0  1  0  0  1  0  0  0  0           2  6  1 Mule Haas (PHA) It is usually his teammates Al Simmons, Jimmie Foxx, and Lefty Grove that show up in these Stellar Performances headlines, but today in Boston, Mule Haas had his finest performance of the season and put together a game at the level of Simmons or Foxx.  The A's destroyed the Red Sox and Haas was a  key reason why, going 3-5 with a HR, 2 doubles, and 6 RBI.  Haas now has 22 RBI on the season and the A's continue to hum along in first place.

Week in Review - National League (May 20-26, 1929)

  The Giants have been nearly unbeatable - in the previous week they had a win streak of 6 straight games, and after dropping one they now have a new 6 game win streak going.  They are 9-1 in their last 10 games and have now opened a 5 game lead over the surging and now second place Cardinals.  The Cardinals and the Cubs, meanwhile, are two teams headed in different directions.  After briefly flirting with overtaking the Giants just a couple of weeks ago, the Cubs now find themselves at .500 and trailing the Giants by 6.5 games.  The Cubs have lost five straight.  Meanwhile, the Cardinals have won 5 in a row and now find themselves in sole possession of second place. The Pirates continue to badly underperform as compared to the actual standings on this date , while the Brooklyn Robins, behind a surging Babe Herman, are outperforming expectations. It will be interesting to how quickly (and if) the Cubs can rebound, as their offense is quite powerful and, on the whole, the pitching has b

Stellar Performances - Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons (May 25, 1929)
