A number of great games today - with three going to extras!

April 22, 1949: Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals

A third extra-innings game on the day and another extra-inning home run to seal a victory.  This time it was Cubs firstbaseman Phil Cavaretta blasting a two-run homer in the top of the 12th to give the Cubs the lead and overcome a sterling 10-inning performance by Cardinals starter Al Brazle.  The Cubs are now 2-2 while the Cardinals fall to 1-2.  A second extra innings game today saw the Reds getting the road win in 11 innings.  Hank Sauer was the star of the show, going 4-5 with a solo home run and driving in three runs on the day.  The Reds move to 2-2, while the Pirates lose a second straight to fall to 2-2. Hank Sauder (Reds)

In the 12th inning of a 1-1 game, A's centerfielder Sam Chapman came to bat with two outs and the bases loaded...and proceeded to blast a grand slam that would prove to be the game winner (his third homer of the year).  And even with such dramatics, it is not his picture you see below but that of A's starter Carl Scheib who, although he didn't get the decision on the day, went an incredible 10 innings and allowed only one run. Both teams now sit at 2-3. Carl Scheib (Athletics)
