Stellar Performances - Bump Hadley (May 23, 1929)

 5/23/1929 Washington Senators (15-13) at Philadelphia Athletics (19-10) Teams                  1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9 10 11         R  H  E -----------              -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --               -- -- -- Senators              0  0  0  0  0  1  0  0  0  0  0            1  8  1 Athletics              0  1  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  1            2  4  2 Bump Hadley (WSN) It's not very often that a losing effort is singled out for applause in this Stellar Performances section, but Bump Hadley's no-decision today in Philadelphia deserves recognition.  Hadley gave up a solo home run to slugger Jimmie Foxx in the bottom of the 2nd inning but then completely shut down the vaunted Athletics offense.  Hadley pitched 10 full innings, surrendering only 3 hits and the lone run off of Foxx's longball.  Unfortunately for Hadley, after turning the game over to the bullpen, the A's were able to hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th that won them the game.  Des

Stellar Performances - Mel Ott (May 23, 1929)

 5/23/1929 Boston Braves (11-18) at New York Giants (19-9) Teams                1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E --------                -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Braves              0  0  0  0  2  0  0  1  0         3  9  2 Giants              0  0  0  2  0  5  0  0  x         7  9  1 Mel Ott (NYG) The Giants have caught fire and it's hard to think it doesn't directly correlate to Mel Ott breaking out from his slow start to the season.  Today at the Polo Grounds, Ott blasted two solo home runs in leading the Giants to a 7-3 victory.  Despite his subpar start, Ott now has 6 home runs on the season, has driven in 16 runs, and has his batting average up to .308. With today's win, the Giants are now 9-1 in their last 10 games and have opened up a 3.5 game lead over the Cubs.

Stellar Performances - Travis Jackson (May 22, 1929)

 5/22/1929 New York Giants (17-9) at Brooklyn Robins (15-13) Teams                1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E --------                -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Giants              0  3  3  0  0  0  2  0  0         8 10  0 Robins              0  0  0  0  0  0  0  2  2         4  7  1 Travis Jackson (NYG) With Bill Terry hitting at an all-world level, Travis Jackson has flown a bit under the radar this season and had been slumping slightly from his red hot start to the year.  Any slump ended today in Brooklyn, where Jackson hit his 4th and 5th home runs of the season and led the Giants to their sixth straight victory.  With the win, the Giants move to 17-9 and remain atop the National League standings.  Jackson finished the day 3-4 with 2 home runs and knocked in 4 runs, bringing his RBI total for the season to 18.

Stellar Performances - Ethan Allen (May 21, 1929)

 5/21/1929 St. Louis Cardinals (14-16) at Cincinnati Reds (12-17) Teams                    1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E -----------                  -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --          -- -- -- Cardinals              0  0  0  2  0  0  0  1  0          3  7  2 Reds                         0  0  3  0  0  2  0  4  x         9 11  0 Ethan Allen (CIN) The Reds have hovered near the bottom of the National League standings for most of the season, but with today's victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Reds have now won three in a row and are no longer occupying last place.  The Reds were led today by slugger Ethan Allen, who had his finest day of the 1929 season - 2-4, 2 home runs, and 4 RBI.  Allen now has 4 home runs on the season and has driven in 23 runs. The Cardinals are now officially reeling, with this making three straight losses.  The Cardinals fall to two games below .500.

Stellar Performances - Red Lucas (May 20, 1929)

 5/20/1929 St. Louis Cardinals (14-15) at Cincinnati Reds (11-17) Teams                  1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E -----------              -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --          -- -- -- Cardinals            0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0         0  5  1 Reds                       2  0  1  2  0  0  0  0  x         5  7  0 Red Lucas (CIN) Another lights out pithing performance today, this time in Cincinnati by the aptly-named Reds ace Red Lucas.  Lucas has remained a fixture near the top of the weekly "Top 5 Pitchers" list in the National League and today's performance will only push him higher up the list.  Lucas went the distance, giving up only 5 hits and striking out 3.  With the win, Lucas moves to 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA on the season.  The Reds remain near the bottom of the NL standings but Lucas has been brilliant.

Stellar Performances - Guy Bush (May 20, 1929)

 5/20/1929 Pittsburgh Pirates (11-15) at Chicago Cubs (17-12) Teams                1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E ---------                -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --          -- -- -- Pirates               0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0         0  2  3 Cubs                     0  0  0  0  0  2  2  0  x       4  9  0 Guy Bush (CHC) Despite the incredible offensive seasons being put together by a number of players, it seems like the Stellar Performances have been dominated by pitchers as of late.  Today is no different, as Guy Bush was untouchable in Chicago this afternoon, leading his team to a 4-0 victory while surrendering only 2 hits over 9 innings.  With the win, the Cubs go to 5 games above .500 and continue to push the Giants for the National League lead.

Week in Review - National League (May 13-19, 1929)

  The Giants reclaim the top spot in the National League and are currently the hottest team in all of baseball, not losing a single game over the last week.  Their winning streak now stands at 6 games and they have opened a 2 game lead over the Cubs.  The Phillies offense continues to keep them hovering around the top of the standings as well.  As seems to have been the case over the last two weeks, it keeps feeling like the Cardinals and the Pirates are finally going to kick it into gear, but neither has been able to maintain it - the Cardinals remain at .500 while the Pirates continue to struggle to get to that mark. Here is the link to the Baseball-Reference page that shows today's actual standings in 1929.  The Giants are clearly overachieving compared to real life performance, but considering the offensive weapons in their lineup, and the solid pitching being delivered, I don't find it that surprising.  The Robins are also far outpacing their real life record - Babe Herma

Week in Review - American League (May 13-19, 1929)

  And now we start to see the cream rise to the top, as expected.  The Athletics and Yankees are both catching fire, having won 4 and 5 games in a row, respectively, and both are 7-3 in their last 10 games.  The A's have been flirting with taking over the top spot for the last few weeks and they completely dominated the Senators in their series this week, taking four straight from Washington.  The Senators had surprisingly remained in first place all season, but it looks like the A's and Yankees are going to start to pull away from the rest of the league.  The White Sox, Browns, and Tigers all keep hovering around .500 and trying to stay within striking distance, but Philly and New York look like they are clearly the class of the American League this season.
