April 22, 1949: Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Indians

The Indians moved to 3-1 on the year behind another magnificent starting pitching performance, this time from Gene Bearden.  Bearden pitched eight innings of 1-run baseball, striking out four along the way.  Thirdbaseman Mickey Vernon hit his first home run - a two-run shot - in the bottom of the 4th and that was enough run support for the win.  With the loss, the Tigers drop to 2-2. April 22, 1949: St. Louis Browns vs. Chicago White Sox

It was a real pitcher's duel today on the southside of Chicago, with White Sox starter Marino Pieretti coming out on top of a 2-1 decision.  Pieretti went the distance, allowing only one run, while his teammates managed to cobble together two runs again Browns starter Red Embree.  With the win, the White Sox are now 2-2, while the Browns fall to 1-3. April 22, 1949: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

Yankees starter Allie Reynolds went the distance today, allowing only one run as the Yankees destroyed the rival Red Sox.  Billy Johnson and Dick Kryhoski both homered and provided more than enough run support for the win.  The Yankees move to 2-2 on the year while this was the Red Sox's first loss to move to 3-1. April 21, 1949: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds

Johnny Vander Meer pitched a complete game shutout, giving up only four hits on the afternoon.  With today's result, both the Reds and the Cardinals sit at 1-1 on the year. Johnny Vander Meer (Reds)

April 21, 1949: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs

Cubs starter Monk Dubiel threw a complete game shutout to help get the Cubs their first win of the season.  Solo home runs from Bob Scheffing and Andy Pafko provided the only runs from either team on the day.  The Cubs move to 1-2, while the Pirates lose for the first time this season and fall to 2-1. April 21, 1949: New York Giants vs. Brooklyn Dodgers

Gil Hodges hit his first home run of the season in a five-run 6th inning for the Dodgers, which allowed them to take back a lead they would not surrender again.  Jackie Robinson also went 3-3 with a walk and a run. The Dodgers move to 2-1, while the Giants fall to 1-2. Gil Hodges (Dodgers)

Tigers starter Lou Kretlow pitched eight innings of fantastic baseball and the two runs provided by his offense were enough to move the team to 2-1 on the year. 

April 21, 1949: Cleveland Indians vs. St. Louis Browns

Centerfielder Paul Lehner hit his first home run of the season in the 2nd inning, but it was a three-run 4th inning that gave the Browns a lead they would never surrender and their first win on the season (now 1-2).  The Indians got a home run from Hank Edwards in the top of the 9th, but it was too late and the Indians fell to 2-1.
