Stellar Performances - Chick Hafey (May 18, 1929)

 5/18/1929 St. Louis Cardinals (14-13) at Pittsburgh Pirates (10-14) Teams             1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9 10         R  H  E -----------           -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Cardinals       0  1  0  1  0  0  0  0  2  2         6 13  0 Pirates              0  0  0  1  0  2  0  0  1  0         4 15  1 Chick Hafey (STL) In what was a spectacular back-and-forth game today in Pittsburgh, the Cardinals managed to score two runs in the top of the 9th to take a late lead, get the game into extra innings by only allowing the Pirates to get one across in the bottom of the 9th, and then score 2 more runs in the top of the 10th to seal the victory.  The star of the day was unquestionably, Chick Hafey.  Rather than worry about the tough days that Frankie Frisch and Jim Bottomley had hitting in front of him, Hafey decided he would just go ahead and drive himself in.  Hafey blasted 2 home runs (giving him 5 on the season) and drove in 3 runs (giving him 25 on the year).

Stellar Performances - Charlie Root (May 18, 1929)

 5/18/1929 Cincinnati Reds (9-17) at Chicago Cubs (16-11) Teams         1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E ------            -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --          -- -- -- Reds            0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0         0  5  6 Cubs            0  0  0  2  0  1  0  2  x         5  6  0 Charlie Root (CHC) Charlie Root has already been acknowledged as being one of the best pitchers in the National League so far this season (he is listed as the #3 pitcher in the NL in the most recent Week in Review ) but he pitched his masterpiece today in Chicago.  In what was a tight game for most of the afternoon, Root was unflappable, pitching all 9 innings while allowing no runs and only 5 hits.  A performance like this not only helps the Cubs continue to fight toward the top of the NL standings, but could also push Root further up the list of best pitchers in the league.

Stellar Performances - Mel Ott and Bill Walker (May 18, 1929)

 5/18/1929 New York Giants (16-8) at Boston Braves (10-16) Teams                1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E --------                -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Giants              1  0  0  0  2  0  2  4  0          9 11  0 Braves              0  0  1  0  0  0  0  0  3         4 11  3 Mel Ott (NYG) In the second game of a doubleheader today in Boston, Mel Ott took care of the Giants at the plate while Bill Walker controlled the game from the mound (and the plate for that matter).  Ott, who has struggled at times to start the season, hit both his second and third home runs of the season and knocked in 3 runs.  Walker, meanwhile, was great pitching and hitting.  While he ultimately gave up 4 earned runs on the day, three of those came in the bottom of the 9th when the game was already decided and he was simply closing out a complete game.  He ended up throwing 8.2 innings with only one run given up prior to the bottom of the 9th.  At the same time, the unl

 5/15/1929 Chicago Cubs (14-11) at Boston Braves (10-11) Teams                1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9   R  H  E --------                -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --       -- -- -- Cubs                  0  8  0  0  1  0  0  0  0   9 16  3 Braves              0  0  0  7  0  0  0  0  1   8 12  0 Norm McMillan (CHC) It was an offensive explosion in Boston today, but it looked like all the firepower was going to come only from the Cubs, as Chicago burst open an 8-0 lead in the 2nd inning.  The Braves, however, had other ideas and scored 7 runs of their own in the bottom of the 4th.  The Cubs managed to hold on to the lead, despite the Braves getting a run back in the bottom of the 9th, and move to 14-11 on the year.  This was a significant victory for the Cubs, who had lost three straight coming into today. The leader for the Cubs was third baseman Norm McMillan, who went 2-5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI.  The league's best hitter, Rogers Hornsby, also blasted his league-leading 9th home

Stellar Performances - Babe Ruth (May 15, 1929)

 5/15/1929 New York Yankees (12-9) at Cleveland Indians (11-13) Teams           1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9   R  H  E ---------           -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --     -- -- -- Yankees        2  5  0  0  0  0  0  3  1  11 12  0 Indians         0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  1   1  4  2 Babe Ruth (NYY) The Bronx Bombers lived up to their name today in Cleveland, posting 11 runs and easily routing the hometown Indians.  Babe Ruth led the way, swatting 2 home runs himself and going for back-to-back homers with Lou Gehrig in the 8th inning.  Ruth finished the day 3-6 with 4 RBI.  Ruth's two rockets today bring his season total to 7 HRs, along with 19 RBI.  George Pipgras also deserves praise for his effort on the mound, pitching a 1-run complete game and giving up only 4 hits on the day. With the win, the Yankees pull to within 1.5 games of the first-place Washington Senators.  The Philadelphia Athletics sit only a half game out of first.

Stellar Performances - Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons (May 14, 2023)

Stellar Peformances - Dolf Luque (May 13, 1929)

 5/13/1929 Cincinnati Reds (9-14) at New York Giants (10-8) Teams     1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9   R  H  E --------      -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --       -- -- -- Reds          4  0  0  0  0  0  1  0  0   5  7  0 Giants     0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0   0  7  3 Dolf Luque (CIN) The Reds helped to continue the fall of the New York Giants from the top of the National League standings.  Behind a superlative performance by right-hander Dolf Luque, the Reds beat the Giants 5-0 today at the Polo Grounds.  Luque pitched a complete game shutout, allowing 7 hits and overcoming 3 errors made by his defenders.  Things certainly looked dicey in the 6th inning when Luque walked Bill Terry to load the bases with no outs. The Reds kept faith in their starter, however, leaving him in to get out of the jam without allowing a run. With the loss the Giants are now 4-6 in their last 10 and, after leading the National League for most of the season, are now a half game out.

Stellar Performances - Danny MacFayden (May 13, 1929)

 5/13/1929 Boston Red Sox (7-14) at Chicago White Sox (10-13) Teams             1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9   R  H  E -----------           -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --       -- -- -- Red Sox         0  0  0  3  0  2  0  0  0      5 17  2 White Sox       0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0    0  1  2 Danny MacFayden (BOS) Danny MacFayden turned in what is likely the best pitching performance of the entire 1929 season thus far.  MacFayden gave up a single in the 3rd inning, but that was it - he went the distance and threw a 1-hit shutout, walking one and striking one out along the way.  For good measure, MacFayden also went 2-4 at the plate.  A great day for the lowly Red Sox!
