April 19, 1949: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds

The Cardinals' four runs in the top of the 4th inning prove to be enough for them to hang on for a 4-3 win at Crosley Field.

April 19, 1949: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs

The day's theme of dominant starting pitchers continued at Wrigley Field, as Pirates starter Rip Swell completely shut down the Cubs to get the Pirates off to a winning start to the season.

April 19, 1949: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Boston Braves (Game 2)

Boston starter Vern Bickford was even better in the second game of today's doubleheader than Warren Spahn was in the first. Bickford tossed a complete game shutout, striking out 10 while walking only two, as the Braves cruised to sweep the doubleheader.  The game also saw Braves catcher Bill Salkfeld blast a three-run home run in the bottom of the 5th inning to break the scoreless deadlock. Braves ace Warren Spahn went eight innings, allowing only one run on a 9th inning solo homer, before handing the ball to Nels Potter to secure the last three outs and get the Braves the win in the first game of a doubleheader. Warren Spahn (Braves)

April 19, 1949: Cleveland Indians vs. St. Louis Browns

Indians ace Bob Feller left the game with a shoulder injury after pitching two scoreless innings and it appears that he could miss significant time.  But the team still managed to hold on to the lead they grabbed in the first inning to give the Indians the win, with Ken Keltner blasting his first home run of the season.
