  -           The Yankees absolutely obliterated the St. Louis Browns.   Centerfielder Joe DiMaggio continued his tear, hitting his first home run of the season and driving in four runs, which brings his league leading total to 20 RBI.   At the same time, Yankees right fielder George Selkirk was equally as effective, hitting a home run himself and driving in five runs.   The Yankees ultimately won 19-9. George Selkirk (Yankees) -           Red Sox player-manager Joe Cronin had himself a day in Detroit – going a perfect 4-4 with a walk, hitting two home runs, and driving in six runs. The Red Sox pounded the Tigers 10-4. Joe Cronin (Red Sox) -           Dodgers catcher Mickey Owen was the hero today at Ebbets Field, hitting a walkoff single in the bottom of the 10 th inning to beat the Reds 2-1.  Dodgers starter Luke Hamlin contin...

Small slate of games today, but the highlight came in Cleveland: Oscar Grimes (Indians) -           It took extra innings to decide today’s Tigers-Indians game.   Pinch-hitter Oscar Grimes hit a single in the bottom of the 10 th to drive in the winning run from second, as the Indians beat the Tigers 5-4.

Weekly Roundup (Games thru 4/27/1941)

An eventful week of games, and it looks like the better teams are already starting to rise toward the top of both leagues.  The Yankees have been consistent all year and with Joe DiMaggio starting to get hot, they might be about to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the American League. The surprise of the Browns' Johnny Lucadello leading both leagues in batting average, hitting an outrageous .600 on 15 at-bats, is probably the biggest shocker.  I assume this will start to level out, but it will be interesting to see how long he can keep it up. Starting with next week's Weekly Roundup, I will start including league leaders and tracking guys who are having the best years.

  -           Joe DiMaggio is really heating up.   After hitting two triples yesterday, he came back today and went 3-5 with two doubles and four RBI, as the Yankees crushed the Senators 11-1. Joe DiMaggio (Yankees) -           After pitching a one run complete game just five days ago, Dodgers starter Hugh Casey was even better today, going the distance in a shutout where he allowed only four hits.  The Dodgers battered the Giants 6-0 to move their record to 9-5 on the year.   -           In a game for the ages, it took 20 innings (YES, 20 INNINGS!) to decide the Cubs-Pirates game in Pittsburgh.   After the Cubs scored in the top of the 20 th inning, the Pirates responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to steal the win.   The win came on a two-run single by third baseman Debs Garms.   Garms finished the day at an incredible 5-10 at the plate.
