Baseball Classic Replays

Bill Dickey (Yankees) Yankees starter George Pipgras appeared to be well on his way to a complete game victory, cruising into the 9th inning having allowed only one run and leading 3-1 but ran into trouble while trying to close things out.  He was ultimately replaced by Ed Wells, who in turn gave up a double to Red Sox pinch hitter Charlie Berry that tied the game.  This then lead to four innings of extra baseball in the Bronx, ended only in the bottom of the 13th inning when Yankees catcher Bill Dickey won the game on a sacrifice fly.  With the win, the Yankees remain on the heels of first place Philadelphia, with New York moving to 5-2 on the year and only a half game back.  The Red Sox, meanwhile, remain in the American League cellar at 1-8.

Wes Ferrell (Indians) It was a true pitcher's duel today in Cleveland, as both starters took shutouts into the 9th inning.  Indians starter Wes Ferrell pitched nine full innings, allowing only four hits and striking out five.  It also was his turn at-bat to lead off the bottom of the 9th inning, but he was pinch hit for by Bibb Falk - who proceeded to blast a pinch-hit walk-off homerun to seal a 1-0 victory for the Indians.  With the win, Cleveland moves to 3-3 on the year, while the White Sox fall to 2-2.

  Yes, I've started a few replays in the short time I've been into baseball sims, only to get sidetracked by a different season/game and hope to something else.  I've loved Skeetersoft since I started playing the 1929 season last year, but then hopped around to try a few other games and had been playing a lot of PC Replay Baseball, which I also think is fantastic.  But...something recently gave me the itch to try another season of NPIII and after starting an interesting book called "Breaking the Slump" by Charles Alexander about baseball during the Depression, I figured why not start right at the beginning of the 1930s.  I purchased the 1930 season and have been off and running.  As I said, there are other sims I really like - particularly Replay PC - but, I've yet to play anything that feels as smooth, and is this simple with still feeling like baseball like NPIII/Skeetersoft.  So, I'm going to barrel forward with this replay.   A couple of things jump out at me in these standings.  First, is the New York Giants staying firmly in the driver's seat of the National League and maintaining the best record in all of baseball.  The lead over the Cardinals was 4.5 games last week and has now moved to 5 after the Giants rattled off three straight wins to end the week.  The other thing I notice is the Pirates climbing up toward where they were expected to be, with the Waner brothers leading the way and getting them over the .500 mark and in sole possession of third place. What jumps out most to me, though, and which I'm happy to see is the Chicago Cubs start to stabilize things after the 9-game losing streak they were in the midst of last week.  While they still sit a game below .500, it's certainly an improvement over the 4 games under .500 they were during the last Week in Review.  You have to figure they are going to continue to crawl their way back toward the top, as they might have t...

  The standings stay pretty consistent from last week, as it looks like the Senators have more staying power than I have been giving them credit for.  Despite having lost their last two games, they remain basically in a three-way tie for second place in the AL and appear to be a part of the four team group that are distancing themselves from the rest of the league.  With their sledgehammer offense and stellar pitching, I still think, as was the case in the actual 1929, that nobody will be able to catch the Athletics.  But, I've been expecting the Senators to fall out of the race for weeks and it simply hasn't happened.  The battles among the top four teams have been outstanding - of the lower half teams, it seems like the Tigers could make a run into the top half, but they can't stay consistent at all.
