Baseball Classic Replays

  -           Star left fielder Joe Medwick hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10 th inning to get the Dodgers out of a losing streak by claiming a 5-4 win over the visiting Cubs.   Dodgers’ starter Kirby Higbe was cruising, leading 2-0 into the 8 th inning, when suddenly the Cubs exploded for 4 runs.   The Dodgers managed to respond and get it to extra innings before Medwick’s heroics sealed the win.   Medwick went 3-5 on the day, driving in five runs. Joe Medwick (Dodgers) -           Reds’ starter Paul Derringer has been fantastic all season but was still 0-3 heading into today’s matchup with the Boston Braves.  He pitched another gem to get his first win of the season, going the distance and allowing only four hits.  Surprisingly, he didn’t strike out a single batter but was still nearly unhittable.   -           Yankees’ left fielder Charlie Keller hit two home runs today in the Yanks’ 6-0 drubbing of the White Sox.   Keller drove in five of the team’s six runs as they Yankees improved to a major league best 13-5. Charlie Keller (Yankees) -           Indians’ first baseman Hal Trosky hit his fifth home run of the season in dramatic fashion – a walk-off solo shot, that capped a three-run bottom of the 9 th to secure Cleveland’s eight straight win.  They beat the Red Sox 7-6 in a classic. Hal Trosky (Indians) -           The Philadelphia Phillies blew a lead in the top of the 9 th but managed a walk-off, pinch-hit single by Hal Marnie to salvage a 5-4 win over the Cardinals.   -           Bucky Walters threw a complete game gem – a three-hit shutout to give the Reds a close 1-0 win in Brooklyn. Bucky Walters (Reds) -           Phillies’ right fielder Stan Benjamin hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11 th inning to get the struggling Philadelphia Phillies an 8-7 win over the Pirates.   -           In Cleveland, the Indians put four runs across in the bottom of the 9 th to tie the game.   Roy Weather hit a two-out, three run home run to tie the game at 8-8.   After an Athletics’ pitching change, the next man up, Ken Keltner, then blasted a walkoff solo home run.   What a finish! Ken Keltner (Indians) -           There was also a classic at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis, as a Wally Judnich home run in the bottom of the 9th inning tied the game at 2-2, then a three-run walk-off home run by Harlond Clift stole the Browns a 5-2 win over the first-place Yankees.
