May 31, 1941 (Replay Baseball)

  May 31, 1941 -           The defending world champions are flexing their muscle, riding incredible starting pitching and timely hitting to drive toward the top of the National League standings.   The Reds have now won seven straight, besting the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 behind Johnny Vander Meer’s complete game 1-run performance.   Vander Meer struck out nine along the way and only surrendered the lone St. Louis run in the 9 th inning.   Meanwhile, the Cardinals continue their slide as this makes four straight losses.   May 30, 1941 A total of 16 games played today, with doubleheaders in nearly every city in the big leagues!  There were some great games and stellar individual performances today. -           In the first game in Boston, Ted Williams continued his incredible season, going 3-4 and coming up only a single shy of the cycle. He hit his sixth home run of the year and drove his season batting average up to an astonishing .431.   The Red Sox bested the Yankees by a score of 8-6.   It should also be noted that Yankees centerfielder Joe DiMaggio has also pushed his average over the .400 mark, currently sitting at .406.   May 29, 1941 -           With a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 5 th inning, Red Sox starter Joe Dobson tried to lay down a sacrifice but to get the runner on first into scoring position.   Instead, he fouled off the first two attempts and then decided to swing away…. only to then blast a two-run home run and give Boston a 4-2 lead.   The Red Sox proceeded to score four more runs that inning and never looked back in route to an 11-6 win over the Philadelphia Athletics. Joe Dobson (Red Sox) -           Bob Feller pitched a gem today in Detroit, as the Indians beat the Tigers 5-0.  Feller went the distance, shutting out the Tigers and striking out 10 along the way.
