Weekly Roundup (Games thru 4/20/1941)

Image
The Replay Roundup provides a perfect summary of the first week of action in the 1941 season!  We have had some great games thus far and some stellar starts to the season - Joe Kuhel (White Sox) and Dick Bartell (Tigers) in particular have started the season white hot!   My plan for these Weekly Roundup posts going forward will provide league leaders in the major hitting and pitching categories.  At the moment, only one week into the season, I'm not sure there's much of a sample size to provide anything meaningful or that deserves the time that it will take to organize any statistics.  I will pick up with league leaders sometime around Week 3, I imagine.

  -           Bob Johnson and Frankie Hayes went for back-to-back homers off Yankees’ starter Red Ruffing in the bottom of the 7 th inning in Washington.   The Senators blew this lead in the next inning, but a two-run walkoff homer from centerfielder Sam Chapman in the bottom of the 9 th powered the Senators to their first win of the season, while also handing the Yankees their first loss. Sam Chapman (Senators) -           Giants starter Harry Gumbert pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout at Ebbets Field to beat the Dodgers 1-0. Harry Gumbert (Giants)

  -            Hank Greenberg homered for the second time in as many games to start the year, as the Tigers battered Indians’ starter Bob Feller. Hank Greenberg (Tigers) -           Ted Williams, still not in the everyday lineup of the young season, hit his second pinch hit home run of the season in Boston’s drubbing of the winless Philadelphia Athletics. Ted Williams (Red Sox) -            Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Babe Phelps, in his first start of the season, blasted two home runs in Boston in the first game of a doubleheader.  The Dodgers needed every run to secure a 6-5 win and hand the Boston Braves their first loss of the season. Babe Phelps (Dodgers) - In the second game of the doubleheader in Boston, Dodgers centerfield phenom Pete Reiser hit two triples and starter Whit Wyatt pitched a three-hit shutout.   -          -  Boston Braves second baseman Bama Rowell hits two home runs against the Dodgers – a grand slam in the bottom of the 3 rd inning and then a solo shot in 5 th .   The Braves needed each of his five RBI, as they held on for a 6-5 victory. Bama Rowell (Braves) -          -  New York Giants left fielder Morrie Arnovich clobbered two home runs at the Polo Grounds as the Giants demolished the winless Phillies by a score of 8-1.   Giants’ starter Bob Bowman pitched a complete game, allowing only one run, while also hitting a home run himself. df Morrie Arnovich (Giants) -          - It took 13 innings to complete the Cubs-Cardinals game today at Sportsman’s Park.   It ended only after a solo home run from Cubs’ right fielder Bill Nicholson in the top of the 13 th inning to seal a 6-5 Cubs win - their first win in the young season.
