Stellar Performances - Travis Jackson (June 5, 1929)

With the win, the Giants now lead the National

Week in Review - National League (May 27-June 2, 1929)

It remains impressive how good the Giants have been, and to see the Cardinals continue their fight back into a the pennant race, but the current story in the National League is, without a doubt, the absolute collapse of the Chicago Cubs.  Just a few weeks ago the Cubs appeared poised to dethrone the Giants, but this week saw them lose a 9th straight game and continue their tumble out of the top half of the standings.  This fall is all the more shocking because when you scroll down this page you are going to see a number of Cubs players listed among the best hitters in the National League; additionally, they have had solid start pitching, on the whole, throughout the season.  One key factor could be the Cubs' abysmal 2-9 record in one-run games.  Whatever the issues, Chicago needs to figure things out quickly before they fall too far behind the Giants. Here is the link to the Baseball-Reference page for standings on June 2, 1929.  You will see that the Giants and Robins continue

Week in Review - American League (May 27-June 2, 1929)

A couple of big developments jump out after a quick a review of the standings.  First, the Athletics have opened up a bit of breathing room at the top of the standings.  In last week's Week in Review, they held only a half game lead over the Yankees.  Now, the A's are 4.5 games clear and have won 6 straight.  Even more shocking, to me at least, are the resurgent Washington Senators.  Over the last two weeks it looked like the Senators were going to start a descent toward the middle or bottom of the standings, as I expected coming into this replay, but they have gotten hot again, winning 7 of their last 10 games, and moving back into a tie for second place.  Speaking of teams that have kicked it into gear, the St. Louis Browns have also made a push toward the top of the standings, as they now sit tied with Senators for second place. Moving the other direction, however, have been the Yankees - they capped off a 6-game losing streak this week, only ending it by beating the White

Stellar Performances - Jimmy Welsh (June 2, 1929)

The Cubs, unfortunately, keep trending in the other direction.  They beat the Giants yesterday
