Jimmy Welsh (NYG)

Jimmy Welsh is overshadowed by the plethora of offensive stars in the New York Giants' lineup, but today he was the key to a come-from-behind victory for the first place Giants.  After dropping the first game in this series to the Cubs, it looked like the Giants were set to drop the second as well, as the Cubs put up 4 runs in the first inning.  Welsh, however, would have none of it, having his best game of the season when his team needed it.  Welsh hit two home runs, bringing his season total to 5, and ending the day 3-5.  The Giants ultimately held on for the 9-7 victory.

The Cubs, unfortunately, keep trending in the other direction.  They beat the Giants yesterday to end a 9 game losing streak and based on today's hot start, it looked like perhaps the Cubs were on the verge of starting a win streak.  This blown lead, however, could be devastating - the Cubs remain 1-9 in their last 10 games, now set 4 games below .500, and trail the Giants by 9.5 games.  With the offensive stars that the Cubs have in the lineup (Hornsby, Wilson, Cuyler), it is unfathomable how they have struggled like of late.
