Stellar Performances - Rogers Hornsby (June 10, 1929)

 6/10/1929 Boston Braves (20-26) at Chicago Cubs (24-24) Teams                1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E --------                -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Braves              2  0  0  3  2  0  3  0  0        10 14  2 Cubs                 0  3  2  1  0  3  1  0  1       11 18  3 Rogers Hornsby (CHC) The Cubs continue to try and steady the ship after their horrendous 9-game losing skid ended two weeks ago and today at home against the Braves they twice squandered leads before an Earl Grace walkoff double won the game.  It was their star, however, who provided the most explosive showing of the day - Rogers Hornsby, the best player in the game right now, delivered 3-5 performance at the plate, hitting a triple and home run (giving him 15 for the year) and knocking in 4 runs to bring his league-leading RBI total to 64.  With the win, the Cubs are now back to the .500 mark and will look to climb back within reach of the New York Giants.

Week in Review - National League (June 3-9, 1929)

  A couple of things jump out at me in these standings.  First, is the New York Giants staying firmly in the driver's seat of the National League and maintaining the best record in all of baseball.  The lead over the Cardinals was 4.5 games last week and has now moved to 5 after the Giants rattled off three straight wins to end the week.  The other thing I notice is the Pirates climbing up toward where they were expected to be, with the Waner brothers leading the way and getting them over the .500 mark and in sole possession of third place. What jumps out most to me, though, and which I'm happy to see is the Chicago Cubs start to stabilize things after the 9-game losing streak they were in the midst of last week.  While they still sit a game below .500, it's certainly an improvement over the 4 games under .500 they were during the last Week in Review.  You have to figure they are going to continue to crawl their way back toward the top, as they might have the two best offen

Week in Review - American League (June 3-9, 1929)

  The standings stay pretty consistent from last week, as it looks like the Senators have more staying power than I have been giving them credit for.  Despite having lost their last two games, they remain basically in a three-way tie for second place in the AL and appear to be a part of the four team group that are distancing themselves from the rest of the league.  With their sledgehammer offense and stellar pitching, I still think, as was the case in the actual 1929, that nobody will be able to catch the Athletics.  But, I've been expecting the Senators to fall out of the race for weeks and it simply hasn't happened.  The battles among the top four teams have been outstanding - of the lower half teams, it seems like the Tigers could make a run into the top half, but they can't stay consistent at all. Here is the Baseball-Reference page showing the actual standings through June 9.  As you will see, with the exception of the Senators strong showing, the standings look fair

Hit Streaks - Thru June 9, 1929

  Dale Alexander (DET) So, it is definitely my fault that I have not been posting updates with respect to hitting streaks - particularly because there have been some impressive  streaks thus far this season.  The tab for hit streaks is separate from other batting stats in Skeetersoft - it isn't hidden by any means, but I don't check it as often as I do the usual hitting stats that I incorporate into the Week in Review posts.  So, without further adieu, here are the 20 best hitting streaks so far this season: That is quite an impressive run from Dale Alexander at 27 straight games - as are those from other star players like Rogers Hornsby (23) and Al Simmons (22). The longest active streak belongs to the Brooklyn Robins' Harvey Hendrick, who has hit successfully in his last 14 games.

Stellar Performances - Jesse Petty (June 9, 1929)

 6/9/1929 Pittsburgh Pirates (23-22) at Brooklyn Robins (20-24) Teams           1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E ---------           -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --            -- -- -- Pirates          0  4  2  0  1  0  0  0  0          7 10  3 Robins           0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0            0  4  0 Jesse Petty (PIT) Jesse Petty has quietly been putting together an outstanding season and today was his best outing yet.  Petty, starting for the Pirates today in Brooklyn, pitched a complete game, 4-hit shutout, to move the Pirates over the .500 mark.  Petty, meanwhile, moves to 5-0 with a 2.20 ERA, and is the Pirates ace so far this season.

Stellar Performances - Lefty O'Doul (June 8, 1929)

 6/8/1929 Philadelphia Phillies (18-25) at St. Louis Cardinals (27-22) Teams                  1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9         R  H  E -----------                -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --          -- -- -- Phillies                   0  3  0  0  2  0  1  2  0         8 12  0 Cardinals              3  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  4         7  6  1 Lefty O'Doul (PHI) The Phillies have so many weapons in their lineup it is shocking how bad they have been of late - even after today's win against the surging St. Louis Cardinals, the Phillies are 3-7 in their last 10 games and sit firmly in last place in the National League.  However, Lefty O'Doul cannot be blamed for much of this (it's mainly the pitching) and today in St. Louis he had an outstanding game to curb his own mini-slide.  O'Doul smacked two home runs, giving him 12 on the season, and drove in five runs to give him 40 on the year.  He finished the day 4-5 and scored three runs himself.  For the season, Lefty is now h
