It is rare that the subject of a Stellar Performances entry comes in a losing effort, but this is half a Stellar Performance and half an Instant Classic post.  Today's 10-inning affair in Chicago between the Cubs and the New York Giants was one of the best games of the entire season, with huge momentum swings throughout the day.  The Giants jumped out with 6 runs in the top of the 1st inning, but the Cubs started chipping away with 3 runs in the 2nd inning and kept battling.  Four runs from the Cubs in the bottom of the 7th, the biggest blow coming from catcher Earl Grace's 3-run home run, tied the game and ultimately sent it into extra innings.  In the top of the 10th inning, player of the game Travis Jackson hit a double that knocked in the go-ahead run.  The Giants, however, could not hold onto the lead.  In the bottom of the inning, Norm McMillan knocked in a run to tie the game and then two batters later Kiki Cuyler smacked a walkoff hit to win it.

Travis Jackson (NYG)

Despite the loss, Travis Jackson had a monstrous day - 4-6, a home run, 3 RBI and scoring 2 runs.  Jackson has consistently ranked among the NL's Top 10 Hitters and today was no different.  For the season, Jackson is now hitting .367 with 8 home runs and 28 RBI.

This win was badly needed for the reeling Cubs - it looked as if it was going to be an eighth loss in their last 10 games.  Instead, with a come-from-behind victory, perhaps the Cubs can finally get things back on track.
