A total of 16 games played today, with doubleheaders in nearly every city in the big leagues!  There were some great games and stellar individual performances today.

-          In the first game in Boston, Ted Williams continued his incredible season, going 3-4 and coming up only a single shy of the cycle. He hit his sixth home run of the year and drove his season batting average up to an astonishing .431.  The Red Sox bested the Yankees by a score of 8-6.  It should also be noted that Yankees centerfielder Joe DiMaggio has also pushed his average over the .400 mark, currently sitting at .406.

-          In Cleveland, the Indians split a doubleheader with the White Sox.  In winning the first game, the Indians won their seventh straight game and opened a 5.5 game lead over the second-place Yankees.  In the second game, however, they ran into a stellar performance from White Sox starter Thornton Lee and lost the game 3-2.  The other big story out of Cleveland, though, is Jeff Heath getting his batting average up to .412 and making him the third American League player over .400 at the moment (along with Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio).  It should be an interesting battle for the American League batting title!

-          The Washington Senators obliterated the Philadelphia Athletics today in the first of two in D.C.  The Senators put nine runs across the plate in the first inning and never looked back, blasting the A’s 15-2.  Senators’ left fielder George Case had a stellar game at the plate, going 4-5 with a home run and three RBI while also scoring four runs himself.

-          Dodgers ace Whit Wyatt, who has arguably been the best player in baseball this season, got roughed up for the first time this year.  He went only five innings and had four runs scored on him in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Giants.  On the other side, Giants starter Bill McGee took a no-hitter into the 7th inning before giving up a two-run home run to Dixie Walker.  Pinch-hitter Jimmy Wasdell hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 9th to pull within a run, but ultimately the Dodgers fell 5-4.  This is only Wyatt’s second loss on the season, as he now sits at 8-2.

-          Starting pitcher Luke Hamlin responded in the second half of the doubleheader at the Polo Grounds, getting the Dodgers a much-needed win.  Hamlin threw a three-hit shutout in a 3-0 Dodgers win.

-          In the first game of the doubleheader in St. Louis, Reds right fielder Ival Goodman blasted a grand slam in the top of the 7th to bust the game open and lead the Reds to an 8-2 win over the Cardinals.  Reds starter Paul Derringer was splendid, going the distance and allowing only two runs on five hits.  This gave the Reds their fifth straight win, while the Cardinals have now dropped back-to-back games.  Cincinnati also won the second game of the day to make it six straight for the Reds and three straight losses for the Cardinals.  With the three straight losses, the Cardinals are now tied with Brooklyn atop the National League and Reds trail by only a single game.

-          In the second game of the day in Philadelphia, Boston Braves starter Art Johnson was cruising to what looked like it would be a 2-1 win.  But Phillies pinch-hitter Johnny Rizzo altered those plans when he hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game.  The Phillies went on to win the game in the bottom of the 10th on a wild pitch by Braves pitcher Al Javery.

-          The Cubs took two from the Pirates in Pittsburgh today.  In the second game, Cubs starter Claude Passeau threw a complete game shutout, allowing only six hits on the day.
