-          With a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 5th inning, Red Sox starter Joe Dobson tried to lay down a sacrifice but to get the runner on first into scoring position.  Instead, he fouled off the first two attempts and then decided to swing away…. only to then blast a two-run home run and give Boston a 4-2 lead.  The Red Sox proceeded to score four more runs that inning and never looked back in route to an 11-6 win over the Philadelphia Athletics.

-          Bob Feller pitched a gem today in Detroit, as the Indians beat the Tigers 5-0.  Feller went the distance, shutting out the Tigers and striking out 10 along the way.

-          The Cincinnati Reds snapped the Cardinals’ 7-game winning streak today in St. Louis, blanking the Cardinals by a score of 3-0.  Reds starter Junior Thompson was magnificent, pitching eight shutout innings.  With today’s victory, the Reds have now won four straight themselves and are solidly positioned at third-place in the National League.  The Cardinals, meanwhile, maintain a one-game lead over the Brooklyn Dodgers atop the National League.
