April 22, 1949: Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals

A third extra-innings game on the day and another extra-inning home run to seal a victory.  This time it was Cubs firstbaseman Phil Cavaretta blasting a two-run homer in the top of the 12th to give the Cubs the lead and overcome a sterling 10-inning performance by Cardinals starter Al Brazle.  The Cubs are now 2-2 while the Cardinals fall to 1-2.

  Three games today, two of them really-well played, while the White Sox-Senators was a bit of a runaway.  Today finally saw the Cardinals get their first win of the season, in a game where neither starter went particularly deep.  The Cubs lost their first game of the year but will certainly take a 4-1 start.  The Game of the Day, though, featured a matchup of two star starting pitchers.
