April 23, 1949: Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Cardinals starter Red Munger shut down the hometown Cubs today in Chicago, finishing a complete game, two-hit shutout.  Stan Musial hit his first home run of the season in the victory.  

The Cubs fall to 2-3, while the Cardinals are now 2-2.

  As you can see on the scoreboards, it was full slate of games today and there were some magnificent performances, particularly on the mound.  The Cubs-Pirates affair could make a strong case for Game of the Day, with the Pirates snagging a run in the bottom of the 8th on a Deb Garms RBI single to seal a one-run victory.  But as you will see below, we are going with a pitcher's duel in Boston for today's honors.
