It was a shame that either pitcher had to lose this game - or, in fact, that neither pitcher actually got the win. With pinch hitter Lance Richbourg's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Braves a 2-1 victory, two equally bravura pitching performances were ended. The Braves' Bob Smith pitched 8.1 innings of 1-run baseball before being relieved by game winner Bruce Cunningham. For the Reds, Red Lucas pitched 9-full innings of 1-run baseball himself (along with knocking in the Reds' only run) and went out to start the 10th inning but fell into trouble by allowing the first two hitters to get on base. Reliever Si Johnson came in but was unable to keep the Braves from scoring.
The loss is particularly painful for the Reds, who after starting the season strong have now lost 6 straight games.
