April 17, 1940 (Payoff Pitch Replay)

 


There was only one game played today, so by sheer process of elimination...it is the game of the day.  The funny thing is, though, it was actually a great game anyway and would have been a contender for a Game of the Day tag even with a normal day's action.

The Athletics jumped out to an early lead with a solo homerun in the bottom of the 1st by Wally Moses and added another run in the bottom of the 3rd.  There was a flurry of runs scored in the 5th and 6th innings by both teams, but the real drama started in the 8th inning.  Trailing 6-4 coming into the top of 8th, the Yankees got two men aboard as Joe Gordon stepped to the plate...one pitch later and the ball was flying over the fence for a three-run homerun to give the Yankees a 7-6 lead.  It looked as if the Yankees were on the way to a 2-0 start to the season, but things unraveled in the bottom of the 9th.  Pitcher Johnny Murphy took the ball and blew the Yankees lead.  Athletics catch Frankie Hayes smacked a double to tie the game and then A's shortstop Bill Lillard walked it off with a sacrifice fly.  A truly great game early in the season.

Al Simmons (PHA)

1. Al Simmons, Philadelphia Athletics (3-5, double, 2 RBI, 1R) - I suppose we should start with the man who was chosen by the press as the Player of the Game.  The aging Simmons had a fantastic day at the plate.

2. Joe Gordon, New York Yankees (1-4, 1 home run, 3 RBI) - He only got one hit on the day, but blast it looked as if his heroics in the top of the 8th would win the game for the Yankees.
