April 18, 1940 (Payoff Pitch Replay)

Only three games today, two of which weren't particularly close, but the third game of the day was a true pitcher's duel and provides our Game of the Day.

Sid Hudson (WSN)

Washington Nationals starter Sid Hudson was spectacular today, going the distance in a 5-hit, 1-run performance that gave his club a razor thing 2-1 victory.  Also performing brilliantly was Red Sox starting pitcher Jim Bagby, who himself pitched seven innings of 2-run baseball.  In fact, the Nationals trailed 1-0 (thanks to Dom DiMaggio double in the 3rd) until they finally broke through to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th.  The Nationals managed to tack on another run in the bottom of the 7th on a Buddy Lewis single and that was all that was needed - Hudson took care of the rest.  The complete box score is below:

Today's Best

Tommy Bridges (DET)

1. Tommy Bridges, Detroit Tigers (9 IP, shutout, 3 H, 7 K, 9 BB) - As good as Sid Hudson was for Washington, it was Tommy Bridges who turned in the day's best pitching performance.  Although he walked nine, he struck out seven and allowed only three hits en route to a complete game shutout.  With his win, the Tigers move to 2-0.

2. Sid Hudson, Washington Nationals (9 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K, BB) - As discussed above, Hudson was brilliant and managed to secure a win for the Nationals despite limited run support.

3. Hank Leiber, Chicago Cubs (4-4, double, BB, 2 RBI) - The Chicago Cubs are off to a surprising 2-0 start, taking the first two games of the season from a strong Cincinnati Reds club.  Leiber had a big day today.

3. Bruce Campbell, Detroit Tigers (3-5, 3 RBI) - Right fielder Bruce Campbell hits in front of two bona fide stars in the Tigers lineup (Gehringer and Greenberg), but today he was the one who powered the Tigers to a win.
