April 21, 1940 (Payoff Pitch Replay)

Three games today, two of them really-well played, while the White Sox-Senators was a bit of a runaway.  Today finally saw the Cardinals get their first win of the season, in a game where neither starter went particularly deep.  The Cubs lost their first game of the year but will certainly take a 4-1 start.  The Game of the Day, though, featured a matchup of two star starting pitchers.

Schoolboy Rowe (DET)

Bob Feller, coming off of a complete game shutout on opening day, faced off against Tigers starter Schoolboy Rowe.  In this duel, it was surprisingly Rowe who came out on top.  Rowe pitched into the 9th inning before getting into a bit of a jam and turning it over to his bullpen to finish things off.  Meanwhile, at the plate, it was Charlie Gehringer who did the most damage, going 2-4 with a home run and RBI.  This was a high-level, tense affair throughout.  Full box score below.

Today's Best

Joe Kuhel (White Sox)

1. Joe Kuhel, Chicago White Sox (3-5, HR, triple, 6 RBI, 3 R) - The White Sox first baseman turned in perhaps the finest offensive performance of the young season, only missing the cycle by a double.  His big day helped the White Sox to win their second straight.

2. Charlie Gehringer, Detroit Tigers (2-4, HR, RBI) - See above for full game details.  As most would guess, the one-two punch of Gehriner and Hank Greenberg in the middle of the Tigers' lineup is tough to match.

3. Schoolboy Rowe, Detroit Tigers (8.2 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 3 K, 3 BB) - Deserves recognition for outdueling Bob Feller.
