April 22, 1940 (Payoff Pitch Replay)
Four games today, one of which was outstanding. Overall, a good day of action...although as a lifelong Reds fan, I hate seeing the Reds not being able to get on the winning side of things!

It took 15 innings to decide today's game at Crosley Field and as has happened every time this season, the Reds came up short. Reds starter Bucky Walters was cruising and took a two-run lead into the 8th inning, but Cardinals first baseman Johnny Mize came to the plate and changed everything. After Enos Slaughter slapped a double to get on base, Mize blasted a two-run home run to tie the game at 4-4. Then, the two bullpens proceeded to combine to pitch six full innings of scoreless baseball. It wasn't until the top of the 15th inning that Cardinals left fielder Pepper Martin hit an RBI single that would prove to be the winning run. The loss drops the Reds (who, remember, actually won 100 games in 1940 and won the World Series) to 0-3 to start the season. The Reds certainly had their chances, as they blew a lead in the 8th inning and stranded 15 baserunners on the day.

Today's Best
1. Joe Kuhel, Chicago White Sox (2-4, HR, 4 RBI, 3 R) - Kuhel homered for a second straight day, with today's shot being a grand slam, and brought his two-day RBI total to a staggering 10. He might be the hottest hitter in the game to start the season.
2. Johnny Mize, St. Louis Cardinals (2-5, HR, 2 RBI, R) - Mize's 8th inning home run forced the game in Cincinnati into extra innings and ultimately allowed the Cardinals to pick up their second win of the season in the 15 inning classic.
3. Claude Passeau, Chicago Cubs (9 IP, 1 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 2 BB) - Passeau moved to 2-0 on the season in his complete game performance and his ERA sits at 0.50. He looks to be the ace of a surprise Cubs team that has run out to a 5-1 start to the season.
4. Ken Keltner, Cleveland Indians (3-5, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R)
5. Dom Dallessandro, Chicago Cubs (3-5, 2 RBI, 2 R)
