April 23, 1940 (Payoff Pitch Replay)
Of today's five games, there were two were hard fought one-run affairs, one of which ended in a walkoff. In the first game in Boston, the Nationals were able to hang on to a slim lead despite the Red Sox getting a run back in the bottom of the 9th inning and having the tying run on second base when the game ended. The other one, in the Bronx, is today's Game of the Day.
Game of the Day: Philadelphia Athletics vs. New York Yankees

The finish to this game in the Bronx was wild. The Yankees led most of the day, answering the Athletics' run in the top of the 8th with its own run in the bottom half of the inning. In the 9th, however, the Athletics' Dee Miles and Wally Moses each drove in a run to tie the game. As in the previous inning, though, the Yankees answered. Joe Gordon led off the inning with a double and then in the next at-bat, Yankees centerfielder Tommy Henrich drove Gordon in to win the game.

Today's Best
1. Tex Carleton, Brooklyn Dodgers (9 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 1 BB) - Tex Carleton didn't pitch at all in the big leagues in 1939, but he returned with gusto today in Brooklyn, completely dominating the Boston Bees.
2. Tommy Henrich, New York Yankees (2-4, 2 RBI, triple, BB) - As discussed above, Henrich provided the walkoff hit to seal the win for the Yankees.
3. Joe Gordon, New York Yankees (3-5, 2 RBI, double) - Knocked in two runs and hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the 9th inning that led to him scoring the game-winning run.
