April 24, 1940 (Payoff Pitch Replay)

As you can see on the scoreboards, it was full slate of games today and there were some magnificent performances, particularly on the mound.  The Cubs-Pirates affair could make a strong case for Game of the Day, with the Pirates snagging a run in the bottom of the 8th on a Deb Garms RBI single to seal a one-run victory.  But as you will see below, we are going with a pitcher's duel in Boston for today's honors.

Game of the Day: Washington Nationals vs. Boston Red Sox

Lefty Grove (BSA)

The Red Sox' Lefty Grove outdueled Nationals starter Joe Haynes to get the Red Sox back to .500 on the young season.  Sox third baseman Jim Tabor hit a home run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead and Grove kept a shutout going into the 5th inning when pitcher Haynes actually hit a double to knock in his own run and tie the game.  In the bottom of the 7th, Red Sox catcher Gene Desautels knocked in what would be prove to be the game winning run.  Grove held on the rest of the way, completing a 1 run, 5 hit performance.

Today's Best

Hy Vandenberg (NYG)

1. Hy Vandenburg, New York Giants (9 IP, 0 R, 7 H, 3 K, 2 BB) - The unheralded Vandenburg hurled a complete game shutout to extend the Giants perfect start to the season to 4-0.

2. Whit Wyatt, Brooklyn Dodgers (9 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 2 BB) - Two straight days of spectacular pitching for the Dodgers, as yesterday starter Tex Carleton turned in the performance of the day.  Wyatt was just as good today, allowing the Bees to score in the top of the 1st inning and then completely shutting them down the rest of the way, giving up only one hit the rest of the day.

3. Lefty Grove, Boston Red Sox (9 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K) - See above for the description of Grove's superb effort.  He moves to 2-0 on the year.

4. Tommy Bridges, Detroit Tigers (9 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 8 K, 6 BB)

5. Babe Young, New York Giants (2-5, HR, 3 RBI, 1 R)
