April 23, 1949: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

It was a longball party at Fenway Park today, with Vern Stephens, Dom DiMaggio, and Sam Mele all hitting home runs to help the Red Sox avenge the previous day's bludgeoning by the Yankees.  Today, the Sox won big to move to 4-1 on the year.  The Yankees are now 2-3.

  As you can see on the scoreboards, it was full slate of games today and there were some magnificent performances, particularly on the mound.  The Cubs-Pirates affair could make a strong case for Game of the Day, with the Pirates snagging a run in the bottom of the 8th on a Deb Garms RBI single to seal a one-run victory.  But as you will see below, we are going with a pitcher's duel in Boston for today's honors.
