- Hank Greenberg is officially off to the United States Army and off of the Detroit Tigers roster. For the extremely shortened season he had, Greenberg had quite the impact as he exits the season as the current league leader in home runs (6) and hitting a sturdy .303.

St. Louis Browns third baseman Harlond Clift is
on fire – today he hit two home runs (to tie him for the league lead with 6) ending
the day at 3-5 with five RBI, as the Browns held on to beat the Philadelphia
Athletics 11-10. Clift now hitting .395
on the year. Meanwhile, the Athletics
are floundering, having now lost nine straight.
- The Dodgers were cruising to another victory today until Johnny Mize led off with a solo home run in the top of the 9th inning. The Cardinals managed another run that inning to get the game to extra innings. The drama continued in extras, as Cardinal pinch-hitter Ernie Koy was thrown out at the plate in the top of the 12th inning by Dodgers’ left fielder Dixie Walker. Enos Slaughter hit his second triple of the day in the top of the 13th, driving in Johnny Mize. The Cardinals added on another run in that inning and were then able to hang on for a 5-4 win.
