-          It was an incredible pitcher’s duel today in Chicago, as it took 19 innings to decide a 2-1 Tigers victory.  Neither starter got a decision in this one, but they were both superb.  Tigers starter went nine innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out seven.  White Sox starter Ted Lyons lasted 12 innings, allowing only one run on nine hits and striking out five.  The game wasn’t decided until the 19th inning, when Tigers catcher Birdie Tebbetts hit a triple in the top of the inning and was the driven in on a groundout.  An instant classic at Comiskey Park.

-          The Philadelphia Athletics snapped their 10-game losing streak today in D.C.  The key to the win was a brilliant outing from starter Bill Beckmann, who pitched a complete game shutout in route to a 6-0 win.

-          A great pitcher’s duel also took place Cincinnati today, as the Reds’ six-game win streak was snapped despite a superb effort from starter Johnny Vander Meer.  Vander Meer went the distance, fanning 15 Cubs in the process, but the long ball did him in – he gave up only three hits, but two of them were home runs and resulted in the Cubs putting three runs across the plate.  The Reds meanwhile, managed only one run on four hits against Cubs’ starter Claude Passeau.

-          Babe Dahlgren had a two-home run day at the Polo Grounds as the Boston Braves pounded the New York Giants.  Dahlgren hit his second and third home runs of the season and drove in six of the team’s eight total runs.  They beat the Giants by a score of 8-3.
