June 1, 1941

We reach the month of June and have 13 games on tap for the day!

-          The Yankees took the first of a doubleheader in Cleveland in thrilling fashion when a Charlie Keller solo homer in the top of the 10th secured a 6-5 win.  This was after the Yankees scored in the top of the 9th to take a one-run lead and then the Indians answered in the bottom of the inning to send it to extras.  Joe DiMaggio and Jeff Heath both stay red hot and keep their respective batting averages above .400.

-          In the second game of the doubleheader in Cleveland, Yankees third baseman Joe Gordon led a power surge as the Yankees smoked the Indians 9-3.  Gordon hit a grand slam in the first inning and the route was immediately on.  Gordon finished the day 3-5 with five RBI.  By sweeping the doubleheader, the Yankees pull back within three games of the first-place Indians.

The first game of the doubleheader in Detroit was an instant classic, with two aging veterans providing outstanding performances.  Red Sox starter Lefty Grove was nearly perfect until the bottom of the 9th inning.  With a 3-1 lead, he allowed the Tigers to tie the game without recording an out in the inning.  Then, after Mike Ryba came in, it was ultimately Tigers legend Charlie Gehringer who singled in the winning run for a 4-3 win.

-          In a matchup of the two of the three top NL teams, the St. Louis Cardinals bested the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-1 behind a strong outing from starter Max Lanier.  Lanier went the distance, giving up one run on six hits.

-          The first game of a doubleheader at the Polo Grounds saw the Reds win their 9th straight, beating the Giants 4-1.  Reds starter Monte Pearson, making his first start of the year, was brilliant, throwing a complete game and completely baffling the Giants.  In the second game of the doubleheader, it looked as if the Reds were about to win their 10th straight, but the Giants came storming back in the bottom of the 8th, scoring four runs in that inning and taking a 6-4 lead.  The catalyst was a three-run home run from third baseman Joe Orengo.  As a result, the Cardinals now move ahead by a half-game.

-          It took 13 innings to decide the second half of the doubleheader between the Cubs and the Phillies.  The Cubs pulled out the 4-3 win thanks to an RBI single from first baseman Phil Cavarretta in the top of the 13th.
