- It looked as if the Yankees were about to pull one game closer to the first-place Indians, as starter Marius Russo was on form and took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th inning in Cleveland. Russo was one out away from a win before giving up a single to Hal Trosky. Second baseman Ray Mack stepped to the plate next and then proceeded to blast one over the wall and give the Indians a 3-2 walk-off victory. With the win, the Indian extend their lead to 4 games.

They say big-time players step up in big moments and Ted
Williams proved that maxim true today at Tiger Stadium. With the Red Sox trailing Detroit 8-6 in the
9th inning, The Kid stepped up and blasted a two-run home run (#7 on
the year) to tie the game. Later in the
inning, with two outs, the light-hitting fill-in second baseman Odell Hale
picked an opportune time to hit his first home run of the season and give the
Red Sox a 9-8 lead. Boston hung on in
the bottom of the inning to get the win.
-
The reeling Pittsburgh Pirates came into today
having lost eight straight games, but behind a complete game effort from Johnny
Lanning they snapped the skid by beating the Boston Braves 5-2. Lanning allowed two runs on seven hits, while
Arky Vaughan went 2-4 with a triple and holds onto his NL best batting average.

The defending World Series champions stayed red hot
(no pun intended), as the Cincinnati Reds won 7-3 at the Polo Grounds
today. Starter Elmer Riddle moved to 3-0
on the season, while centerfielder Harry Craft provided the offensive spark,
going 3-5 with a homer (#6) and two RBI.
With the win, the Reds now sit atop the National League standings, holding
a half game lead over both the Dodgers and the Cardinals.
