With the Red Sox trailing the White Sox 2-0 in
the top of the 5th today at Comiskey Park, Boston suddenly exploded
with back-to-back-to-back home runs to take a 5-0 lead. First, Lou Finney hit a three-run shot, then
Ted Williams blasted his eighth homer of the year, and then Joe Cronin launched
his own. A few batters later, third
baseman Jim Tabor added his own two-run shot (#9 on the year). Joe Cronin even managed to launch another
home run in the very next inning – a two-run shot that gives him six on the
season. Ted Williams also hit a second
home run in the 8th inning, bringing his total to nine on the year
and his league-leading batting average up to .423.
- A thriller in Detroit saw the home Tigers launch a furious comeback to nick an 8-7 walk-off win. Washington Senators’ starter Ken Chase was cruising most of the day, but once the Tigers got him out of the game and got to the Senators bullpen, things unraveled. Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the 8th, the Tigers managed to play three runs in that inning and then five runs in the bottom of the 9th to grab the win. The winning run came on a Bruce Campbell single to score Rudy York.

New York Giants star Mel Ott had a monstrous day
at the Polo Grounds in the first game of a doubleheader against the
Pirates. Ott went 4-5, hitting two home
runs (he barely missed hitting a third) and driving in four runs. The Giants smoked the Pirates 12-7. In the second game of the day, the Pirates
returned the favor and battered the Giants, but Ott managed to hit another home
run to give him seven on the season.

Reds ace Johnny Vander Meer dominated the Philadelphia
Phillies today, going the distance and allowing only one run on seven
hits. He also struck out 11 batters for
his second 10+ strikeout game of the season.
With the win, the Reds move to 5-4 on the season and the Reds stay atop
the National League with a one game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals.
