- The Philadelphia Athletics remain in the American League cellar, but its centerfielder Sam Chapman continues his monstrous season. In the second game of a doubleheader today in Cleveland (after the Indians took the first game 7-1), Chapman helped secure a split with a two-triple performance. He finished the day 2-5 with three RBI. For the season, he is tied for the AL lead in home runs with 13 and is hitting a spectacular .376.

Aging superstar Lefty Grove went the distance
today in the first game of a doubleheader in Chicago, beating the White Sox 4-3
and driving in a run himself, essentially winning the game on both sides. In the second game of the doubleheader, the
Red Sox completed the sweep with a 4-3 win.
Third baseman Jim Tabor blasted two home runs in the second game, to
bring his season total to 13, tying him for the most in baseball.
-
Today in Brooklyn, Dodgers starter Whit Wyatt
improved to a league-best 10-2 on the season, going the distance and allowing
only one run on four hits. The lone Reds
run came in the first inning and from there on out it was total dominance form
Wyatt, as it has been almost all season.
He finished the day with eight strikeouts. Even more importantly, his performances
stopped a two-game skid for the Dodgers and moves them only a game and a half
out of first behind the Reds.
-
Mel Ott stayed hot today at the Polo
Grounds. In leading the Giants to a
sweep of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals, Ott hit his eighth
home run of the season, then in game two he hit numbers nine and ten to give
him the National League lead. The Giants
beat the Cardinals cruised to a 4-1 win in the first game, but it took a Jesse
Orengo a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 9th in game two
to get the Giants the win.
