May 4, 1941 (Replay Baseball)

  -           A walk-off win in St. Louis as the Browns bested the Red Sox 8-7 in extra innings.   The game ended on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Joe Grace in the bottom of the 10 th inning. Joe Grace (Browns) -           An error by Dodgers’ second baseman Pete Coscarart on a plat that would have ended the top of the 11 th inning, ultimately allowed the Pirates an extra at-bat to drive in the winning run.  Next up was Stu Martin and he ripped a single to bring across the run that sealed the 8-7 Pirates win.  The Dodgers nearly tied it in the bottom of the inning, but Pirates left fielder Debs Garms gunned down Mickey Owens at the plate. May 3, 1941 (Replay Baseball)

  -           Star left fielder Joe Medwick hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10 th inning to get the Dodgers out of a losing streak by claiming a 5-4 win over the visiting Cubs.   Dodgers’ starter Kirby Higbe was cruising, leading 2-0 into the 8 th inning, when suddenly the Cubs exploded for 4 runs.   The Dodgers managed to respond and get it to extra innings before Medwick’s heroics sealed the win.   Medwick went 3-5 on the day, driving in five runs. Joe Medwick (Dodgers) -           Reds’ starter Paul Derringer has been fantastic all season but was still 0-3 heading into today’s matchup with the Boston Braves.  He pitched another gem to get his first win of the season, going the distance and allowing only four hits.  Surprisingly, he didn’t strike out a single batter but was still nearly unhittable.   -           Yankees’ left fielder Charlie Keller hit two home runs today in the Yanks’ 6-0 drubbing of the White Sox.   Keller drove in five of the team’s six runs as they Yankees improved to a major league best 13-5. Charlie Keller (Yankees) -           Indians’ first baseman Hal Trosky hit his fifth home run of the season in dramatic fashion – a walk-off solo shot, that capped a three-run bottom of the 9 th to secure Cleveland’s eight straight win.  They beat the Red Sox 7-6 in a classic. Hal Trosky (Indians) -           The Philadelphia Phillies blew a lead in the top of the 9 th but managed a walk-off, pinch-hit single by Hal Marnie to salvage a 5-4 win over the Cardinals. May 1, 1941 (Replay Baseball)

  -           Bucky Walters threw a complete game gem – a three-hit shutout to give the Reds a close 1-0 win in Brooklyn. Bucky Walters (Reds) -           Phillies’ right fielder Stan Benjamin hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11 th inning to get the struggling Philadelphia Phillies an 8-7 win over the Pirates. April 30, 1941 (Replay Baseball)

  -           In Cleveland, the Indians put four runs across in the bottom of the 9 th to tie the game.   Roy Weather hit a two-out, three run home run to tie the game at 8-8.   After an Athletics’ pitching change, the next man up, Ken Keltner, then blasted a walkoff solo home run.   What a finish! Ken Keltner (Indians) -           There was also a classic at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis, as a Wally Judnich home run in the bottom of the 9th inning tied the game at 2-2, then a three-run walk-off home run by Harlond Clift stole the Browns a 5-2 win over the first-place Yankees.   -           The Yankees absolutely obliterated the St. Louis Browns.   Centerfielder Joe DiMaggio continued his tear, hitting his first home run of the season and driving in four runs, which brings his league leading total to 20 RBI.   At the same time, Yankees right fielder George Selkirk was equally as effective, hitting a home run himself and driving in five runs.   The Yankees ultimately won 19-9. George Selkirk (Yankees) -           Red Sox player-manager Joe Cronin had himself a day in Detroit – going a perfect 4-4 with a walk, hitting two home runs, and driving in six runs. The Red Sox pounded the Tigers 10-4.   Small slate of games today, but the highlight came in Cleveland: Oscar Grimes (Indians) -           It took extra innings to decide today’s Tigers-Indians game.   Pinch-hitter Oscar Grimes hit a single in the bottom of the 10 th to drive in the winning run from second, as the Indians beat the Tigers 5-4.
