June 8, 1941 (Replay Baseball)

  June 8, 1941 -           The Philadelphia Athletics remain in the American League cellar, but its centerfielder Sam Chapman continues his monstrous season.   In the second game of a doubleheader today in Cleveland (after the Indians took the first game 7-1), Chapman helped secure a split with a two-triple performance.   He finished the day 2-5 with three RBI.   For the season, he is tied for the AL lead in home runs with 13 and is hitting a spectacular .376.   June 7, 1941 -           The Yankees kept pace with the Indians, staying three games back, after an offensive barrage and a stellar outing from starting pitcher Lefty Gomez.   Gomez went the distance, giving up one run on four hits, while the Yankees got home runs from Joe DiMaggio (#6), Johnny Sturm (#2), and Tommy Heinrich (two homers to give him 6 on the year). Lefty Gomez (Yankees) -           In a battle of top flight NL teams, the Cincinnati Reds beat the Dodgers 7-2 today at Ebbets Field.  The play that put the game away was a Frank McCormick three-run home run in the top of the 8 th inning.  With the win, Reds starter Bucky Walters moves to 8-1 on the season and the Reds now have a 1.5 game lead over the Cardinals and 2.5 over the Dodgers.   June 6, 1941 -           The last place Philadelphia Athletics managed to top the AL-leader Cleveland Indians toady in Philly by a score of 11-7.   The A’s got to star Bob Feller early, chasing him after only 1 and 2/3 innings pitched and after allowing 7 runs.   Athletics second baseman Benny McCoy had a spectacular day, going 4-4 and driving in three runs. Benny McCoy (Athletics) -           With the Red Sox trailing the White Sox 2-0 in the top of the 5 th today at Comiskey Park, Boston suddenly exploded with back-to-back-to-back home runs to take a 5-0 lead.  First, Lou Finney hit a three-run shot, then Ted Williams blasted his eighth homer of the year, and then Joe Cronin launched his own.  A few batters later, third baseman Jim Tabor added his own two-run shot (#9 on the year).  Joe Cronin even managed to launch another home run in the very next inning – a two...

  June 5, 1941 -           It took 10 innings to decide today’s Yankees-Tigers game in Detroit, with the Yankees ultimately stopping their two-game skid and getting the 5-4 win.   Joe Gordon responded every time the Yanks needed to answer the Tigers, going 3-5 with 3 RBI. Joe Gordon (Yankees) -           Athletics centerfielder Sam Chapman homered for a second straight day, bringing his league-leading total to 12 as the A’s beat the White Sox 7-4.   June 4, 1941 -           Athletics centerfielder Sam Chapman hit his league-leading 11 th home run of the year by blasting a grand slam off of White Sox starter Thornton Lee.   That was more than enough run support for Athletics starter Les McCrabb, who pitched a complete game shutout and allowed only four hits. Sam Chapman (Athletics) -           It took 16 innings to deiced today’s contest in Boston between the Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals.  Ultimately, it was decided by a Gus Mancuso two-out double in the top of the 16 th inning, give the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish.   June 3, 1941 -           Tigers starter Dizzy Trout went the distance today at home against the Yankees, giving up only one run on four hits and striking out eight.   The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning the game 5-1. Dizzy Trout (Tigers) -           The Dodgers throttled the St. Louis Cardinals today at Ebbets Field, but it initially looked like it was going to be a nailbiter between starters Whit Wyatt and Mort Cooper.  The game was scoreless into the 6 th inning, when Dixie Walker opened things up for the Dodgers with a solo home run (#2 on the year).  Whit Wyatt then helped his own cause later in the 6 th , hitting a two-out single to drive in the second run of the game.  Pete Reiser truly blew things open that same inning with a three-run home run, to push the Dodger lead to 7-0.  That was more than Wyatt needed, as he...

 June 2, 1941 -           It looked as if the Yankees were about to pull one game closer to the first-place Indians, as starter Marius Russo was on form and took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 9 th inning in Cleveland.   Russo was one out away from a win before giving up a single to Hal Trosky.   Second baseman Ray Mack stepped to the plate next and then proceeded to blast one over the wall and give the Indians a 3-2 walk-off victory.   With the win, the Indian extend their lead to 4 games.
