May 8, 1941 (Replay Baseball)

  -           Hank Greenberg is officially off to the United States Army and off of the Detroit Tigers roster.   For the extremely shortened season he had, Greenberg had quite the impact as he exits the season as the current league leader in home runs (6) and hitting a sturdy .303. Hank Greenberg (Tigers) -           St. Louis Browns third baseman Harlond Clift is on fire – today he hit two home runs (to tie him for the league lead with 6) ending the day at 3-5 with five RBI, as the Browns held on to beat the Philadelphia Athletics 11-10.  Clift now hitting .395 on the year.  Meanwhile, the Athletics are floundering, having now lost nine straight.   -           Now in the everyday lineup, Red Sox star Ted Williams is starting to find his groove.  Today he went 3-4 with a home run, walk, and three RBI.  The Red Sox powered past the White Sox by a score of 8-3. Ted Williams (Red Sox) -           St. Louis Browns starter Johnny Allen not only pitched a complete game, giving up only two runs and striking out six along the way, but also hit two home runs himself!  At the plate, Allen went 3-4, knocking in five runs through his two home runs.   -           For a second straight day the Indians take a walk-off victory away from the Washington Senators.  Jeff Heath was again involved in the ending – rather than getting the game-winning hit, as he did yesterday, he led off the bottom of the 9 th with a triple.  Ultimately, Heath was driven in on a single by second baseman Ray Mack.  The Indians have no won three in a row and are 9-1 in their last 10 games. Jeff Heath (Indians) -           Yankees centerfielder Joe DiMaggio stays white hot, blasting two solo home runs (his second and third on the season) and driving in three runs on the day, as the Yankees picked up a 4-2 win over the Tigers.  That makes six straight wins for the Yankees and moves their season record to an incredible 17-5.   -           The Yankees won their fifth straight game today, beating the Tigers 9-0 and pushing their league-best record to 16-5.   Joe DiMaggio continues to sizzle, hitting three doubles en route to a 4-5 day with four RBI.   Starter Lefty Gomez was dominant on the mound, pitching a complete game shut out and allowing only four hits. Lefty Gomez (Yankees) -           The Indians won with another walk-off today, this time from left fielder Jeff Heath.  His two-out single in the bottom of the 9 th gave the Indians a 6-5 win over the Senators.  Cleveland’s starter Bob Feller was not as precise as usual, allowing five runs, but he did strike out 13 in the eight innings he worked.   -           A walk-off win in St. Louis as the Browns bested the Red Sox 8-7 in extra innings.   The game ended on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Joe Grace in the bottom of the 10 th inning. Joe Grace (Browns) -           An error by Dodgers’ second baseman Pete Coscarart on a plat that would have ended the top of the 11 th inning, ultimately allowed the Pirates an extra at-bat to drive in the winning run.  Next up was Stu Martin and he ripped a single to bring across the run that sealed the 8-7 Pirates win.  The Dodgers nearly tied it in the bottom of the inning, but Pirates left fielder Debs Garms gunned down Mickey Owens at the plate.   -           Star left fielder Joe Medwick hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10 th inning to get the Dodgers out of a losing streak by claiming a 5-4 win over the visiting Cubs.   Dodgers’ starter Kirby Higbe was cruising, leading 2-0 into the 8 th inning, when suddenly the Cubs exploded for 4 runs.   The Dodgers managed to respond and get it to extra innings before Medwick’s heroics sealed the win.   Medwick went 3-5 on the day, driving in five runs. Joe Medwick (Dodgers) -           Reds’ starter Paul Derringer has been fantastic all season but was still 0-3 heading into today’s matchup with the Boston Braves.  He pitched another gem to get his first win of the season, going the distance and allowing only four hits.  Surprisingly, he didn’t strike out a single batter but was still nearly unhittable.   -           Yankees’ left fielder Charlie Keller hit two home runs today in the Yanks’ 6-0 drubbing of the White Sox.   Keller drove in five of the team’s six runs as they Yankees improved to a major league best 13-5. Charlie Keller (Yankees) -           Indians’ first baseman Hal Trosky hit his fifth home run of the season in dramatic fashion – a walk-off solo shot, that capped a three-run bottom of the 9 th to secure Cleveland’s eight straight win.  They beat the Red Sox 7-6 in a classic. Hal Trosky (Indians) -           The Philadelphia Phillies blew a lead in the top of the 9 th but managed a walk-off, pinch-hit single by Hal Marnie to salvage a 5-4 win over the Cardinals.
