  -           Joe DiMaggio continues his monster season and is on course to run away with the RBI title – today he drove in six runs, bringing his season total a staggering 44.   He finished the day 3-5 with a home run and a double and the Yankees scored 16 runs as a team! Joe DiMaggio (Yankees) -           Jimmie Foxx turned back the clock today in Boston, continuing his outstanding season and showing glimpses of years past when he was arguably the best hitter in baseball.   “The Beast” smacked his first two home runs of the season and driving in four runs.   The Red Sox beat the Tigers 5-3 to move to 14-12 on the year.   -           Unheralded Reds third baseman Chuck Aleno had a career day at Crosley Field, hitting a double and a triple and driving in five runs.   The Reds smashed the Phillies 9-3. Chuck Aleno (Reds) -           Cardinals starter Lon Warneke has been fantastic this season, even if his win-loss record doesn’t reflect it.  He pitched another gem today, going the distances and allowing only one run while striking out six.  With the win, Warneke moves to 2-3 on the year and the Cardinals maintain their one-game lead over the Dodgers atop the National League.   -           Cubs first baseman Hank Leiber hit a grand slam to cap off an eight-run 8 th inning at Wrigley Field, as the Cubs came from behind to beat the New York Giants 9-4.   Lieber now has four homers on the year. Hank Leiber (Cubs)

  -           In Philadelphia, the Browns' Chet Laabs and Walt Judnich went back to back in the St. Louis Browns’ 8-2 route of the Athletics. Walt Judnich (Browns) -           In Boston today, the Red Sox routed the White Sox, with Joe Cronin driving in five runs and going a perfect 3-3 on the day with two walks. Joe Cronin (Red Sox) -           Tigers’ centerfielder Pat Mullin hit a grand slam in the top of the 8 th inning to cap a five-run inning for Detroit and to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead.  The Tigers couldn’t hold the lead, however, as the Senators got a run in the bottom of the 9 th to send it into extra innings.  In the bottom of the 11 th , Senators’ second baseman Jimmy Bloodworth hit a walk-off single for an 8-7 Washington victory.   -           The Cleveland Indians took a 5-3 win today in the Bronx to dethrone the Yankees from first place in the American League.   Starter Bob Feller went 7.2 innings, striking out eight and allowing three runs.   The offensive star was third baseman Ken Keltner, who hit his AL-leading sixth home run of the year and drove in three runs.   The Indians have now won five straight and lead the Yankees by a half game. Ken Keltner (Indians) -           Harlond Clift hit his major league-leading seventh home run in the top of the of the 7 th inning to break a 4-4 tie.  Then Athletics’ right fielder Wally Moses responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run of his own.  The Athletics ultimately won 11-4 after some big late innings.  A’s centerfielder Sam Chapman was the day’s star, going a perfect 4-4 with a home run and four RBI.
