June 10, 1941 (Replay Baseball)

  June 10, 1941 -           They Yankees went home run crazy today at Comiskey Park, blasted four homers within the first three innings of the game – two of them coming from the red hot Joe DiMaggio.   After going 3-5 today, DiMaggio improved his batting average to .402 (trailing only Ted Williams), increased his MLB-leading RBI total to 58 after driving three against the White Sox, and brought his season home run total up to eight.   June 9, 1941 -           In Brooklyn, the Dodgers pulled within a half game of the first place Reds by beating the Reds 9-3.   It started out promising for the Reds, as they scored three runs in the first inning thanks to two untimely Dodger errors, but from that point on it was all Dodgers.   Starter Hugh Casey went the distance, allowing only two hits and striking out six, while the offense was provided by Pete Reiser’s two triples and three RBI. Pete Reiser (Dodgers) -           Danny Litwhiler also had two triples today in Philadelphia, as the last-place Phillies took one from the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 8-3.  Litwhiler finished the day 3-4 with five RBI.   The Ohio teams are holding strong, sitting atop both leagues! Now through the first week of June and it looks like two good pennant races shaping up.  I'll update with a full blown leaders post at the end of the month - until then, the weekly roundups will mirror this post.

  June 8, 1941 -           The Philadelphia Athletics remain in the American League cellar, but its centerfielder Sam Chapman continues his monstrous season.   In the second game of a doubleheader today in Cleveland (after the Indians took the first game 7-1), Chapman helped secure a split with a two-triple performance.   He finished the day 2-5 with three RBI.   For the season, he is tied for the AL lead in home runs with 13 and is hitting a spectacular .376. Sam Chapman (Athletics) -           Aging superstar Lefty Grove went the distance today in the first game of a doubleheader in Chicago, beating the White Sox 4-3 and driving in a run himself, essentially winning the game on both sides.  In the second game of the doubleheader, the Red Sox completed the sweep with a 4-3 win.  Third baseman Jim Tabor blasted two home runs in the second game, to bring his season tota...

  June 7, 1941 -           The Yankees kept pace with the Indians, staying three games back, after an offensive barrage and a stellar outing from starting pitcher Lefty Gomez.   Gomez went the distance, giving up one run on four hits, while the Yankees got home runs from Joe DiMaggio (#6), Johnny Sturm (#2), and Tommy Heinrich (two homers to give him 6 on the year). Lefty Gomez (Yankees) -           In a battle of top flight NL teams, the Cincinnati Reds beat the Dodgers 7-2 today at Ebbets Field.  The play that put the game away was a Frank McCormick three-run home run in the top of the 8 th inning.  With the win, Reds starter Bucky Walters moves to 8-1 on the season and the Reds now have a 1.5 game lead over the Cardinals and 2.5 over the Dodgers.   June 6, 1941 -           The last place Philadelphia Athletics managed to top the AL-leader Cleveland Indians toady in Philly by a score of 11-7.   The A’s got to star Bob Feller early, chasing him after only 1 and 2/3 innings pitched and after allowing 7 runs.   Athletics second baseman Benny McCoy had a spectacular day, going 4-4 and driving in three runs. Benny McCoy (Athletics) -           With the Red Sox trailing the White Sox 2-0 in the top of the 5 th today at Comiskey Park, Boston suddenly exploded with back-to-back-to-back home runs to take a 5-0 lead.  First, Lou Finney hit a three-run shot, then Ted Williams blasted his eighth homer of the year, and then Joe Cronin launched his own.  A few batters later, third baseman Jim Tabor added his own two-run shot (#9 on the year).  Joe Cronin even managed to launch another home run in the very next inning – a two...

  June 5, 1941 -           It took 10 innings to decide today’s Yankees-Tigers game in Detroit, with the Yankees ultimately stopping their two-game skid and getting the 5-4 win.   Joe Gordon responded every time the Yanks needed to answer the Tigers, going 3-5 with 3 RBI.
