Baseball Classic Replays

  -           White Sox starter Thornton Lee pitches a complete game shutout, as the Sox beat the Indians 1-0. Thornton Lee (White Sox) -           Red Sox leftfielder Lou Finny went a perfect 5-5 in the Red Sox 7-4 win over the Yankees, to bring his early season batting average to a blistering .488. Lou Finney (Red Sox) -           Dodgers first baseman Dolph Camilli blasted two home runs and drove in five runs in the Dodger’s 7-2 win over the Phillies.  Camilli’s batting average remains subpar at just .167, but he now has three home runs and 12 RBI on the year. Dolph Camilli (Dodgers) -           Pittsburgh Pirates’ starter Bob Klinger threw a complete games shutout of the last-place Cubs, giving up only four hits and one walk while striking out seven.   -           The first Red Sox-Yankees clash of the season did not disappoint.   There were some incredible individual performances – Red Sox third baseman Jim Tabor hit two home runs and drove in four runs; Yankees first baseman Joe Gordon went 4-6 and drove in four runs himself.   Ultimately, however, it was Yankees’ catcher Bill Dickey who supplied the heroics, blasting a walkoff, three-run home run in the bottom of the 12 th inning for a 9-6 Yankees win. Bill Dickey (Yankees) -           Dodgers starter Whit Wyatt pitched his second shutout of the season, going the distance and allowing only four hits.  The Dodgers beat the Phillies 4-0 and Wyatt moved to 3-0 on the young season.   -           Ted Williams, making his first start of the season, blasted his third homer on the year as the Red Sox routed the Washington Senators.   In the same game, Red Sox right fielder Lou Finney also hit two triples. Ted Williams (Red Sox) -           Reds starter Johnny Vander Meer threw a complete game, 1-run effort, striking out nine along the way. Johnny Vander Meer (Reds) -           An instant classic at Ebbets Field today with the Dodgers besting the Giants 2-1 after 11 innings.  The game winning hit came from Dolph Camilli, who smashed a double to drive in the winning run.  Dodgers’ starter Hugh Casey was also fantastic, going nine full inning and allowing only one run.   -           A lighter schedule today, but the star of the day was clearly Senators third baseman Pete Suder.  He went a perfect 5-5 against the Yankees, hitting a double and driving in two runs in the Senators’ 15-7 win. Pete Suder (Senators)

  The Replay Roundup provides a perfect summary of the first week of action in the 1941 season!  We have had some great games thus far and some stellar starts to the season - Joe Kuhel (White Sox) and Dick Bartell (Tigers) in particular have started the season white hot!   My plan for these Weekly Roundup posts going forward will provide league leaders in the major hitting and pitching categories.  At the moment, only one week into the season, I'm not sure there's much of a sample size to provide anything meaningful or that deserves the time that it will take to organize any statistics.  I will pick up with league leaders sometime around Week 3, I imagine.

  -           Bob Johnson and Frankie Hayes went for back-to-back homers off Yankees’ starter Red Ruffing in the bottom of the 7 th inning in Washington.   The Senators blew this lead in the next inning, but a two-run walkoff homer from centerfielder Sam Chapman in the bottom of the 9 th powered the Senators to their first win of the season, while also handing the Yankees their first loss.   -            Hank Greenberg homered for the second time in as many games to start the year, as the Tigers battered Indians’ starter Bob Feller. Hank Greenberg (Tigers) -           Ted Williams, still not in the everyday lineup of the young season, hit his second pinch hit home run of the season in Boston’s drubbing of the winless Philadelphia Athletics. Ted Williams (Red Sox) -            Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Babe Phelps, in his first start of the season, blasted two home runs in Boston in the first game of a doubleheader.  The Dodgers needed every run to secure a 6-5 win and hand the Boston Braves their first loss of the season.
