  June 6, 1941 -           The last place Philadelphia Athletics managed to top the AL-leader Cleveland Indians toady in Philly by a score of 11-7.   The A’s got to star Bob Feller early, chasing him after only 1 and 2/3 innings pitched and after allowing 7 runs.   Athletics second baseman Benny McCoy had a spectacular day, going 4-4 and driving in three runs.   June 5, 1941 -           It took 10 innings to decide today’s Yankees-Tigers game in Detroit, with the Yankees ultimately stopping their two-game skid and getting the 5-4 win.   Joe Gordon responded every time the Yanks needed to answer the Tigers, going 3-5 with 3 RBI.   June 4, 1941 -           Athletics centerfielder Sam Chapman hit his league-leading 11 th home run of the year by blasting a grand slam off of White Sox starter Thornton Lee.   That was more than enough run support for Athletics starter Les McCrabb, who pitched a complete game shutout and allowed only four hits.   June 3, 1941 -           Tigers starter Dizzy Trout went the distance today at home against the Yankees, giving up only one run on four hits and striking out eight.   The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning the game 5-1. Dizzy Trout (Tigers) -           The Dodgers throttled the St. Louis Cardinals today at Ebbets Field, but it initially looked like it was going to be a nailbiter between starters Whit Wyatt and Mort Cooper.  The game was scoreless into the 6 th inning, when Dixie Walker opened things up for the Dodgers with a solo home run (#2 on the year).  Whit Wyatt then helped his own cause later in the 6 th , hitting a two-out single to drive in the second run of the game.  Pete Reiser truly blew things open that same inning with a three-run home run, to push the Dodger lead to 7-0.  That was more than Wyatt needed, as he...

 June 2, 1941 -           It looked as if the Yankees were about to pull one game closer to the first-place Indians, as starter Marius Russo was on form and took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 9 th inning in Cleveland.   Russo was one out away from a win before giving up a single to Hal Trosky.   Second baseman Ray Mack stepped to the plate next and then proceeded to blast one over the wall and give the Indians a 3-2 walk-off victory.   With the win, the Indian extend their lead to 4 games.  What a week of action on the diamonds!  It looks like we are going to have a tight three-way race to the National League title, as the Reds, Cardinals, and Dodgers each appear to be legit contenders.  On the American League side, will anyone be able to catch the Cleveland Indians? And individually, the American League now has three men with batting averages above .400 as Jeff Heath has caught absolute fire in leading the first-place Indians.  It should be a great ride the rest of the way.   June 1, 1941 We reach the month of June and have 13 games on tap for the day! -           The Yankees took the first of a doubleheader in Cleveland in thrilling fashion when a Charlie Keller solo homer in the top of the 10 th secured a 6-5 win.   This was after the Yankees scored in the top of the 9 th to take a one-run lead and then the Indians answered in the bottom of the inning to send it to extras.   Joe DiMaggio and Jeff Heath both stay red hot and keep their respective batting averages above .400.
